What is the function of mitochondria?

Quick answer

Mitochondria are the 'powerhouse of the cell'. Their main function is to produce energy in the form of ATP through aerobic respiration, using oxygen and glucose.

They have a double membrane; the inner membrane is folded into cristae that increase surface area for the reactions of the electron transport chain. The fluid inside (the matrix) is where the Krebs cycle takes place.

Cells that need lots of energy — such as muscle and nerve cells — contain many mitochondria. Mitochondria also contain their own DNA.
